For centuries the Ougi family has been fighting against the forces of evil under the auspices of their patron deity Karura (the Japanese Buddhist derivation of the Hindu Garuda). But when twins are born in the 38th generation, the hereditary powers are divided between them. Shouko has the spiritual abilities of the "Scroll of Heaven" and Maiko the physical powers of the "Scroll of Earth." Their personalities are just as different, but by joining together they can face any evil.
(Braver hearts than mine have despaired of translating the title into English. Literally, it would come out as something like "Transformation Repel Evil Night Travel Karura Dances!" However, just as an example, "mau" should probably be rendered as something more like "comes forth," judging by its use within the story. In the end, most prefer just to leave it untranslated. If nothing else, its much shorter!)

The Halloween releases include a number of side stories. (I currently have no information on which of these may appear in the wide-ban or bunko editions, or what volumes might contain them.):
- V.3 includes Kaidan Furuya no Mori (‰ö’kŒÃ‰®‚ÌŽç), a side story about Oumi Ikeda, a major character of the Nara Onryou Emaki.
- V.12 is made up entirely of short side stories. Akuro-Ou no Kubi (ˆ«˜H‰¤‚ÌŽñ), Youtou Daitsuuren (—d“‘å’ʘA), and Toono Mugenkou (‰“–ì–²Œ¶s) all feature Fuyuki Ogura of the Sendai Kokeshi Onka. Oumi Ikeda appears again in the last story, Yami no Genjutsu Hikae (ˆÅ‚ÌŒ¶pT), along with Kenmochi, another exorcist who appears regularly in the main series.
- The main portion of v.17 is a long side story about Oumis brother Hiromi, who also first appeared in the Nara Onryou Emaki. This is followed by a short prequel story featuring the twins as children, Kyoushu Zenya Tanka (‹³Žå‘O–鿉Ì).
- V.18 includes the Oumi & Kenmochi side story Karura Gaiden Yami no Genjutsu Hikae: Kuroi Tani (‰Þ˜O—…ŠO“`@ ˆÅ‚ÌŒ¶pT@ •‚¢’J).
The Nara Onryou Emaki was also released by Asahi Sonorama as an audio cassette and a novel [text by Kei Rikudou (˜Z“¹Œd)]. A promotional animated movie based on this section of the story had a theatrical release in Tokyo before being released on video. The Sendai Kokeshi Onka was similarly adapted into a six-part animated video series.
The original Karura Mau! comic series was translated into Chinese by Tongli (“Œ—§) under the title Tui Ling zhi Wu!* (‘ÞèË”V•‘I).

V.3 is technically all Oumi & Kenmochi side stories of the Yami no Genjutsu Hikae (ˆÅ‚ÌŒ¶pT) series: Ise no Magagami (ˆÉ¨‚̉Ð_), Kai no Ishigami (b”ã‚ÌÎ_), Abe no Seimei no Matsuei Zenpen (ˆÀ”{°–¾‚Ì––åá@ ‘O•Ò), and Abe no Seimei no Matsuei Kouhen (ˆÀ”{°–¾‚Ì––åá@ Œã•Ò). But the Ougi girls do appear rather prominently in Kai no Ishigami, while even Oumi has no part in Abe no Seimei no Matsuei, a prequel story from Kenmochis childhood.
V.6 contains the side story Bangai Hen: Haha Youkai (”ÔŠO•Ò@ •ê—d‰ö), as well as a short comic review of the original Karura Mau! series, Shuku Honpen Rensai Saikai Kyouran Emaki (j@ –{•Ò˜AÚÄŠJ‹¶—ŠGŠª).
V.7 also includes Suneori Ryuujin Matsuri (‹rÜ—³_Õ‚è).
This Shin Karura Mau! series was translated into Chinese by Daran (‘å‘R) as Fei Tian Xiang Wu (”ò“VãÄ•‘).
